Our Services - Pet Passports

defra
A pet passport enables you to travel in and out of the United Kingdom with your pets without quarantining them when re-entering the country.

We strongly advise you the visit the DEFRA website if you are planning to travel abroad with your pets, in summary:
  • Pets must be fitted with a microchip and vaccinated against Rabies. Vaccinations are kept in stock and can be done at the same time as the micro chipping if necessary.

  • 21 days after Rabies vaccination the vet must take a blood test, this blood is sent away to DEFRA (formerly MAFF) and the test result must show that sufficient immunity has been achieved.

  • Once a positive result has been issued your pet can then obtain a Pet Passport.

  • You must phone DEFRA to check if Export Certificates are needed as well as the Pet Passport Tel - 01284 754323. Depending on which qualifying country you intend to visit or travel through, you may need to obtain an Export Heath Certificate, so the pet can enter/ travel through that country. (DEFRA provides these). If you need a certificate you will need an appointment with a Local Veterinary Inspector at our practice 24-48 hours before travelling to have these papers signed.

  • Six month rule; your pet cannot re-enter the U.K. until six months after the date that the vet took the blood sample with a successful result.

  • Rabies boosters are given every 3 years; some countries require yearly boosters so check this with DEFRA. If given on time your pet will not have to have a repeat blood test. If the vaccination is allowed to lapse then the conditions of the scheme will not be met and your pet would have to be blood tested again.

  • A certificate must be obtained from a vet in the country you are visiting for the treatment of parasites 24-48 hours before re-entry into the U.K.

  • PETS Helpline 0870 241 1710 or email: pets.helpline@defra.gsi.gov.uk & include your postal address and a day time telephone number.
